Intel D875PBZ: the architecture and productivity

Intel company has developed the motherboard of Intel D875PBZ with two-channel solution of a subsystem of dynamic storage. In the architecture of this card created on the basis of a chip set of Intel 875P (Canterwood), a number of perspective firm processing techniques is realised. The given motherboard is oriented to creation of high-powered computer systems and provides support of processors of Intel of Pentium 4 with processing technique Hyper-Threading, calculated for clock rate of the bus of 200 and 133 MHz.

Motherboards — hardly probable not the key component of the architecture of modern computers. Functionality of computers is substantially defined by possibilities of these components. On quality of their design both used units depend also productivity, and that quite often it is much more important — stability and dependability of operation of all system.

Motherboards release many companies. Their number makes now some tens. Nevertheless, Intel motherboards became the measurement standard of quality, dependability and compatibility of the given products. And in it there is nothing surprising as the company is the implementator and the manufacturer not only processors and the chip sets making a basis of the architecture of computers, but also the big number of perspective processing techniques and the specifications accepted as branch standards. Moreover, processing techniques and standards from Intel substantially define development of all branch.

Many of perspective computer processing techniques have found incarnation in the motherboard of Intel D875PBZ oriented to development of powerful workstations and high-powered desktop personal computers. She allows to realise all advantages of the architecture of processors of Intel of Pentium 4 with processing technique Hyper-Threading. High efficiency of the motherboard of Intel D875PBZ is reached thanks to support of the processor bus with a transmission frequency of the given 800 MHz and units of a two-channel subsystem of memory DDR400. Besides, given card supports interface Serial ATA 150 and processing technique of Intel RAID 0.

Reaching of high parametres is provided thanks to the newest set of system logic — Intel chip set 875P. This chip set is the difficult product created on the basis of modern computer architectures and solid-state technologies. It provides implementation of the big number of controllers of peripheral devices.

Intel chip set 875P (i875), known earlier as Canterwood, is oriented to creation of workstations and high-powered desktop personal computers. It supports systems with processors of Intel of Pentium 4 with processing technique Hyper-Threading, 0,13 microns created on processing technique , hooked up through Socket 478 plug and working with bus FSB of type QPB (Quad-Pumped Bus) which clock rate can make 133 or 200 MHz. Usage of the models calculated for frequency of the bus of 100 MHz is possible .

Bus FSB of type QPB at clock rate of 133 MHz carries out data transfer with frequency of 533 MHz, an address part — 266 MHz that allows to reach peak capacity of 4,2 Gbytes/with. At clock rate of 200 MHz data transfer is carried out with frequency of 800 MHz, and an address part — 400 MHz. In this mode peak capacity reaches values of 6,4 Gbytes/with. The bus supports 32-bit addressing that provides to 4 Gbytes of dynamic storage.

Traditionally for line products i8xx the chip set consists of two components — Memory Controller Hub (MCH) and I/O Controller Hub (ICH).

Chips MCH and ICH are jointed by special eight-bit Hub Link local bus to a transfer rate of 256 Mb per second.

MCH component is presented by Intel chip 82875P, containing resources of interfaces of operation with the processor, AGP videoadapter, dynamic storage units, and also with chip I/O Controller Hub.

Built in Intel 82875P the controller of processor bus FSB of type QPB supports the bus with clock rate of 100/133/200 MHz that provides data transfer on frequencies of 400/533/800 MHz.

Built in Intel chip 82875P the memory controller provides support: two-and one-channel functional modes of memory DDR SDRAM (Double Data Rate SDRAM — SDRAM with data transfer on lobbies and back edges of clock pulses of the bus of memory), DDR400/333/266, a maximum memory size — to 4 Gbytes, chips 128, 256, 512 Mbit DDR SDRAM, units both with ECC, and without ECC. In patterns with support ECC in a two-channel mode the bus of 144 bits, without support ECC — 128 bits uses   .

Chip MCH supports different frequency functional modes for processor and memory buses.

For a synchronous functional mode of memory DDR400 and frequency of the bus of 800 MHz probably usage of the mode providing raised productivity of a subsystem of memory, — processing techniques of Intel PAT (Performance Acceleration Technology). In this mode the delays linked to synchronisation are minimised.

The built in controller of a drawing supports one arrangement 0,8/1,5 In AGP 3.0, working in modes AGP 8х/4x.

From features of hub MCH it is necessary to mark, that in its architecture the special interface is provided, allowing to realise Gigabit Ethernet. Carrying over of these resources from ICH in MCH speaks insufficient capacity of the local bus jointing hubs MCH and ICH.

Handle of computer peripheral devices carries out the second component of a chip set. By the way, it is necessary to mark, that in a chip set i875P chip ICH of the fifth version according to what it has received name ICH5 is used and presented by Intel chip 82801ЕB. This chip enters into a base set of a chip set i875P.

The built in resources of a chip of handle of peripheral devices of a base set support: two channels IDE with support ATA 33/66/100 (to four arrangements IDE), two ports Serial ATA 150, eight ports USB 2.0, six PCI (32 bits/33 of MHz), LPC (Low Pin Count), AC ' 97 with support of three codecs of the audiochannels, integrated controller Ethernet 10/100 Base-TX, SMBas, ACPI 2.0, and also other resources and functions.

Except Intel 82801ЕB, usage of the expanded version of hub ICH5 — ICH5R is possible . This expanded variant is presented by Intel chip 82801ЕR which differs from the predecessor function RAID of level 0.

 

Patterns of the motherboard of Intel D875PBZ

Two patterns of the motherboard of Intel D875PBZ are possible. They differ the built in audioresources: in one variant of the card delivered to partners of corporation of Intel, there is a built in 6-channel audiosubsystem with codec Flex ADI 1985, in other variant it is absent.

Features of the architecture of Intel D875PBZ

The motherboard is created according to referens-design which is developed traditionally by the manufacturer of a chip set, in this case Intel-company.

The processor of Intel of Pentium 4 with clock rate of 3,0 GHz, calculated for operation with the bus which transmission frequency of data makes 800 MHz, is supplied by the heat sink with radial layout of edges. Taking into account high teplotvornoj abilities of such products, in the heat sink underplate the interposing from copper is built in.

The motherboard of Intel В875PBZ is oriented to application in high-powered systems. Usage of processors of Intel of Pentium 4 with processing technique Hyper-Threading and the bus of 800 MHz providing reaching of a maximum level of productivity therefore is recommended  . However usage and less efficient models is possible. It can be, for example, the processors calculated for the bus of 533 MHz and even of 400 MHz. Thus together with the motherboard of Intel В875PBZ application of models and without support of processing technique Hyper-Threading is possible.

The functional mode of memory modules DDR SDRAM can be one-channel (3,2 Gbytes/c) or two-channel (6,4 Gbytes/c). The two-channel mode allows to receive completely depthbalanced system in the event that pass-bands of the processor bus and the memory bus coincide and make equal values — 6,4 Gbytes/with. Thus operation of memory modules DDR SDRAM can be or synchronous — clock rate coincides with frequency FSB, or asynchronous — clock rate differs from frequency FSB. It is set in BIOS Setup — SDRAM Frequency.

In BIOS Setup customisation tajmingov dynamic storage units is possible: CAS Latency, RAS Active To Precharge, RAS to CAS Delay, RAS Precharge, that allows to reach maximum productivity of a subsystem of dynamic storage.

In case of a synchronous mode for frequency of the bus of 800 MHz and memory modules DDR400 usage of the mode providing raised productivity of a subsystem of memory is possible. This firm processing technique carries the name “Processing technique of Intel PAT” (Performance Acceleration Technology). The idea laying in its basis, consists in an expedition of passing of data through MCH at the expense of refusal superfluous in this case synchronisations. Thus will not be involved superfluous sinhronizatsionnye bufery in a chip set, and data are handled directly. By estimations of experts of Intel, the reached scoring makes 2-5 %.

From features of the architecture it is necessary to mark presence of the controller of the sound realised on the basis of chip set Analog Devices AD1980. It provides possibility of hooking up of audiosystems 5.1.

Cредствами a chip set the mode of Intel RAID 0 (only for the operating system of Windows XP) is supported  . It is realised by means of two ports Serial ATA 150.

The network controller Gigabit Ethernet realised on a chip of Intel 82547EI is built in the motherboard architecture (Kenai II CSA — Gigabit Ethernet). This controller is hooked up by means of the interface of Intel Communication Streaming Architecture to hub MCH. The given integrated network tools allow to include easily the computer through built in RJ-45 plug in local area network structure.

In a two-channel impulse surge protector of the processor four capacitors on 2200 mkf, ten on 1200 mkf and some less capacious capacitors are applied. By the way, it is necessary to mark, usually in motherboards fourline converters use three-and even. But the implementator of standards VRM — Intel corporation, as well as in a number of the previous motherboards, has considered sufficient for the new product two-channel solution. The held testing has shown, that application of a two-channel variant is justified and provides a system quiescent operation.

The power +5 In in mode Standby is displayed by a light-emitting diode on the motherboard.

In the architecture of the motherboard of Intel D875PBZ possibilities of the hardware monitoring providing the control over supply voltages and operation of cooling fans are used. Thus in the given card, as well as, for example, in Intel D875PBT2, autocontrol of the fan which is responsible for temperature in a system unit is realised. It became possible thanks to processing technique of Intel Precision Cooling.

From other features of the motherboard of Intel D875PBZ it is necessary to mark firm processing technique of fast loading of Intel Rapid BIOS boot. The given processing technique meets practically in all motherboards of Intel.

One more feature — application, as well as in the motherboard of Intel D875PBT2, the forced modes — dispersal (overclocking). A band of change of clock rate:-2 % of,-1 %, +1 %, +2 %, +3 %, +4 % from frequency rating value. This mode is named Burn-In Mode. Presence of the given mode is taken up a position by the company of Intel for usage by the experts experimenting various functional modes of system, differing productivity, teploobrazovaniem, stability.

As to an estimation of the main operation parametres of the described motherboard, it is necessary to mark: at performance of numerous, durable tests the card of Intel D875PBZ worked steadily.

The high-powered card of Intel D875PBZ can be recommended a wide range of users which possibilities of extremal modes of dispersal do not interest and which prefer productivity, dependability and stability of operation.
