Matching of methods of compression DriveSpace 3 and NTFS.

At planning of usage for hard disks of the personal computer of dynamic compression of the information there is a problem of a choice of optimal resources. Really, what of two mentioned methods — DriveSpace 3 and NTFS compresses programs and data on hard disks more effectively.

For the purpose of solution of the given task the following experiment has been made. By means of program DriveSpace 3 the compressed disk which has been filled subsequently by every possible data has been created. As such data texts, programs, video map frames, etc. used . Thus for reaching of maximum compression program Compression Agent strengthening a degree of compression after the termination of operation DriveSpace 3 has been in addition used .

The parametres of disks received by means of program DriveSpace 3, are presented on fig. 23-27.

On fig. 21 data on compaction of compressed disk E are resulted.

Fig. 21. Data on compaction.

On fig. 22 parametres of carrying disk H are presented.

Fig. 22. Data on a carrying disk.

On fig. 23-25 the data received through the shell of Windows are presented.

The Fig. 23 illustrates properties of disk E.

The Fig. 24 gives representation about real size of all files and directories on disk E.

It is necessary to mark, that the digits illustrating operation DriveSpace 3, differ a little: disk E is completely filled (1,55 Gbytes), and total amount of files on it only 1,00 Gbytes. It is linked to a number of the reasons among which it is necessary to mark, for example, an internal arrangement of data in a file on a carrying disk, the size a cluster etc. On fig. 25 properties of a file on a carrying disk on which there is"all compressed disk E are described.

Fig. 23. Properties of disk E.

Fig. 24. Size of all helpful information on disk E.

Fig. 25. Svedenja about a carrying file.

Thus, following results are reached:

Size of the helpful information, a Gbyte

1,00

Size of the compressed information, Mb

533

Aspect ratio

1,9 to 1

Apparently from the resulted data, the information managed to be compressed in 1,9 times.

It is obvious, that after reception of results about data compression by program DriveSpace 3 it was necessary to repeat with a maximum degree of accuracy process of compression of the information, but already by means of built in resources NTFS. With that end in view all information has been copied from disk E on a disk c by file system NTFS in the separate compressed folder. Parametres of this folder are presented on fig. 26.

Fig. 26. Properties of the compressed folder.

As a result of an information compression following results have been received:

Size of the helpful information, a Gbyte

1,00

Size of the compressed information, Mb

535

Aspect ratio

1,9 to 1

On the basis of matching of the numerical estimations received in the course of experiments it is possible to draw output, that on the average both methods provide, practically, equal results by the main criterion which such important parametre as an aspect ratio is.

Usage of dynamic compression by means of program DriveSpace 3 in the resulted example even anticipates an alternative method on some tenth shares of percent a little. Thus it is necessary to mark, that data concerning the occupied size of the compressed information include losses on a cluster size. It was not considered in the previous case as 3 information compressed by program DriveSpace is stored in a uniform file of great volume and loss because of a cluster size are minimum. On fig. 27 properties of the regenerated (not compressed) folder with the same information are presented.

Fig. 27. Properties of a regenerated folder.

In the given figure it is visible, that the losses linked to a cluster size (4 Kbytes), have made approximately 50 Mb. If the cluster was, for example, 1 Kbyte this digit would be less several times. Thus, the method of compression NTFS appears even more effective, in comparison with such popular software, as DriveSpace.

The resulted example and the made analysis of the received results of compression of programs and data visually show advantage of usage of dynamic compression of the information on hard disks by means of the built in resources of file system NTFS.

By the way, file system NTFS uses as a basis not only for Windows NT and Windows 2000, but also more modern and perspective operating system of Windows XP. In this connection all resulted results and outputs remain fair not only for described Windows NT and Windows 2000, but also for this newest system.
